Small Favors 2023
April 28 - July 3, 2023
The Clay Studio
Philadelphia, PA

Small Favors 2023, the 17th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. It will be on view in our new building for the first time just as we are celebrating our first anniversary at 1425 N American Street in April. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. To celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone, a few years ago, we began inviting artists outside of the ceramic world to participate. This year we are excited to have art in wood, metal, glass, fiber, paper, and paint. The majority of the works are examples of small ceramic artworks that range from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures.

Small Favors XV: Expanding the Field
March 6 - May 31, 2020
The Clay Studio
Philadelphia, PA

The show engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. For some their Small Favor is similar to what they normally make on a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to explore new ideas or collaborate with a colleague. Though small in scale, the artworks created for this exhibition are huge in impact.

The Form Will Find Its Way: Contemporary Ceramic Sculptural Abstraction
January 22 - March 30, 2019
Katherine E. Nash Gallery
Regis Center for Art | University of Minnesota
Minneapolis, MN

The Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents The Form Will Find Its Way: Contemporary Ceramic Sculptural Abstraction, an international ceramics exhibition organized in association with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Minneapolis-based independent curator Elizabeth Carpenter has invited five international ceramic artists to participate in the exhibition and she has also chosen works by 35 artists who responded to an international juried call. Carpenter’s title for the exhibition and the curatorial premise guiding her choice of artists stemmed from a quotation by Peter Voulkos, an artist who almost single-handedly ushered in an interdisciplinary approach to the ceramic arts through his breakthrough conviction that the fields of painting, sculpture, and pottery could coalesce in works of great power and significance. Carpenter, in turn, explored experimental, cross-disciplinary, and aesthetically diverse artistic practices, with the explicit intention to avoid preconceptions about established categories like art and craft. The Form Will Find Its Way: Contemporary Ceramic Sculptural Abstraction coincides with Claytopia, the 53rd Annual NCECA Conference, which will take place March 27 – 30, 2019 in Minneapolis. The exhibition includes the creation of a new, site-specific clay installation by Dutch artist Alexandra Engelfriet, made possible with support from the Harlan Boss Foundation for the Arts and Continental Clay Company.

OUR OWN TERMS
September 2-29, 2016
First Friday Reception - September 2, 2016

For the month of September, VAE is offering our Main Gallery space as a platform to promote video artists! OUR OWN TERMS is an opportunity for you to see the work of artists using video or moving images to exhibit their most creative ideas, on their own terms (see what we did there?). The goals of the exhibit include exposing the Triangle to a wider range of video work, helping the public to understand how to purchase and collect video work, and to strengthen VAE's connection with video artists.
